During the Northern Song Dynasty, a Taoist priest from Qingcheng Mountain saw a wounded nine-tailed fox in Qingqiu Mountain. The fox had failed in his practice to transcend the tribulation, so he hid under a red sandalwood tree that was struck by lightning. The Taoist priest carved 19 main beads from the heart of the tree, sealed a wisp of the fox's soul into the wood carving, and inlaid red jade stones that symbolize marriage at key locations. On the night the bracelet was completed, the nine-tailed fox turned into a human form to thank the Taoist priest, and gave him three golden fox hairs, saying that if a man and a woman who truly love each other wear this bracelet, they will be able to break through the obstacles in their relationship.
